If you think the world of cosmetic surgery is exclusively for women, then think again.
Common Plastic Surgery Procedures for Men in the UKMore and more men are opting for cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK, and these procedures come in many different shapes and sizes. From tweaking facial features through to thinning up the waist-line, this article looks at the five most common cosmetic surgery procedures for men, and why so many men are opting for them…
Rhinoplasty
The most common cosmetic surgery procedure in the UK for men is rhinoplasty or, in layman’s terms, nose reshaping. In 2013, over 1,000 men in the UK had this procedure, which alters the shape of the nose to make it more aesthetically pleasing to the patient. When you consider that the nose is one of the most prominent features of the whole body, it is understandable that some men feel that it impacts upon their appearance, and therefore having it altered provides a huge amount of relief.
Eyelid Surgery
In 2013, eyelid surgery was received by 887 men in the UK, in a bid to create a more youthful appearance. As time goes by, the eyelid skin slackens and develops creases and folds, which can lead to an eye that looks “baggy”. A simple procedure to nip away this skin can make the remaining skin around the eye tighter, and therefore give the patient more confidence in their appearance. It should be noted that the surgery does not affect the actual eye in any way, so the risks are minimal.
Breast Reduction
Breast reduction ( Gynecomastia ) being third on the list is something that often surprises people, as they see it as a procedure only performed on women. The fact of the matter is this though: many men are self-conscious about the size of their breasts, and want to have them altered to provide a more “masculine” look. Breast reduction for men was carried out nearly 650 times in the 2013. The need to have a breast reduction can stem from lifestyle (excessive food/alcohol), however it is also often due to medical issues, such as cancer or liver failure.
Otoplasty
Otoplasty, more commonly referred to as ear correction, is fourth on the list, with 543 procedures carried out on men in 2013. This procedure will rectify the problem of protruding ears, which can be the source of much embarrassment in many men. The position of the cartilage in the ear is changed in order to make the angle of the ear better, and the procedure takes just a couple of hours. It can be carried out either with a local or general anaesthetic, depending on circumstances.
Liposuction
Here’s one that everyone has heard of, and it is surprising to many that it is not higher up the list. Liposuction is essentially the removal of fat using surgical methods, therefore leading to instant weight loss in the patient. It is most commonly performed around the stomach, hips, thighs and buttocks, and was a treatment performed on 554 men in 2013. It was also the fastest growing type of cosmetic surgery in the UK, as it saw an increase of 28% from 2012.
